It´s obvious that Portugal. The Man is the band of the hour when you are queing up on a cold December evening in front of the WUK to get hold of the last tickets to their actually 3rd show in 2011 in Vienna. A completely sold out WUK makes me curious about that vaunted not so newcomer band from Alaska.
Crowded in the audience, you get instantly carried away by their sweeping mix of progressive rock/post-rock, riddled with splints of soul and constant changes of tempo. The spurring dust-dry guitar lines give you no time to breath. The hall his already too hot and sticky to breathe anyways. Singer John Gourley´s strangely female voice is hovering over this wall of sound.
Keeping on rocking Portugal. The Man do all their hit songs of their more than four albums (latest realease „In the Mountains In the cloud“ of 2011). Most catching are the pieces of their probably best album „The Satanic Satanist“ of 2009 (watch out for the awesome artistic cardboard vinyl sleevel!).
Definitely one of the must have seen shows in 2011, Portugal. The Man nearly spoil it with their final add-on, a flavour-less cover version of Oasis´ „Don´t look back in anger“. But just nearly.
