Trouble over Tokyo

29.08.2011, Bockkeller, Vienna, Austria

I did another open house session for the nice guys of They shoot music. This time: Trouble over Tokyo.

Trouble over Tokyo is the solo-project of singer/producer Toph Taylor. Having released two albums to date, Trouble Over Tokyo’s music has been described as “Indielectro Angst-Pop” – and is most recognized for Taylor’s voice, quirky Alternative/R&B production, and hand-drawn artworks. Taylor was described by UK broadsheet newspaper the Guardian in 2008 as “simultaneously (recalling) Thom York at his most existentially anxious and Justin Timberlake at his most sexually rapacious.”,and was listed by The Daily Telegraph´s Neil McCormick as one of ten of Music’s overlooked gems of 2008.”

I did a quick portrait shooting with Toph before he started his solo performance where we filmed him with 3 DSLR cameras. The concert took place at the Bockkeller, an old hall in the 16th district of Vienna. I recognized the symmetry of the yellow small curtains which where hanging on both side of a big black curtain. I immediately know that this is the spot where I want to place Toph. We organized a table and a chair and made him feel comfortable.

If I have more time to prepare a shooting I am taking my Elinchrom Ranger Quadraset with me. The Quadra system allows me to use big light modifiers such as the Elinchrom Rotalux Deep Octa 100and with the 400Ws flasheads have plenty of power for their size. I used some textures in postproduction to get a more “dreamy” look.

Used gear:

Camera: Nikon D700

Lens: Nikon AF-S 24-70mm 2,8G ED

Flash: Elinchrom Ranger Quadra

Lightmodifier: Elinchrom Rotalux Deep Octa 100
